My wife and I will be attending the spring meet in San Marcos for the first time, and she is looking forward to visiting a few vineyards and wineries in the area. Does anyone have any suggestions on the ones that are a must see?

We have been to Falls Creek Vineyards in Driftwood, across from Salt Lick BBQ. There are a few around Wimberly, and Sister Creek Vineyards in Sisterdale.

The are dozens on Hwy 290 between Hwy 281 and Fredericksburg. https://maps.app.goo.gl/SdjK2WBwDeVtd7tK8

Lots of choices! Enjoy

Just head to 290 Johnson City to Fredericksburg. Many to choose from. We love West Cave Cellars. Good friends, wine and beer. Several really good wineries along that route. Becker, Signor, Grape Creek, Messina Hoff. Enjoy!

I recommend Bending Branch Winery and Vineyard in Comfort Texas. Their Tannat varietal is particularly fine. https://www.bendingbranchwinery.com/Media-and-Awards/Awards

The town of Comfort was founded by my g-g-grandfather Ernst Hermann Altgelt in 1851. It is located on Interstate 10 a few miles west of San Antonio. Ernst also developed the King William residential area of Victorian mansions located in San Antonio. I was present at the unveiling of the bust of Ernst Altgelt in the town square of Comfort. The sculptress asked me whether I had posed for her. "That was my cousin", I replied.

Thats cool history and ancesty, John!

We love Comfort ~ also be sure to check out Comfort Pizza, craft beers and local wine, great mesquite fired pizza. Be prepared to wait, but its worth it!

Thank you for recommending Comfort Pizza. My wife and I will give it a try. We often pass through Comfort on our way from Spring Branch in rural Comal County to visit Mom's ranch (now on the market) in Gillespie County just south of Fredericksburg. Mom passed at 96 years of age a few months back. As a fifth generation Texan I never tire of beer and barbeque or Mexican cuisine.

We have spent a bit of time in Fredericksburg - not to far from San Marcos, you can make a day out of just visiting wineries... if that's what you really want to do. Top mentions - "Grape Creek" and "Heath" in the same parking lot (sch tastings if you plan to visit, Heath is all sparkling so start here first) , "Barons Creek" (one of my favorites), "Arrowhead" (they actually find arrowheads on the property and have live music on Saturdays sometimes also a favorite) "Rhinory' (they have real rhinos there, cool experience)"Slate Theory" is also really cool, has underground cellars and tasting rooms(sch a tasting if you plan to visit). "Safari" has a neat atmosphere, wine was ok. "The Edge" is awesome, atmosphere is great and shaded looking over the river - good afternoon stop. "Invention" is new, wine was excellent (I believe its owned by the same owners as Grape Creek but on the opposite side of Fredericksburg from the rest). "Altstadt Brewery" is also on 290, great beer selection and food is great, makes a good lunch spot with out going back to town to eat, recommend and early lunch 11-11:30, it can get busy.
